Operation Philosophy

The Kerosnee Distillation Unit Plant has been specifically designed for training and not for commercial production, thus it was of paramount importance that elements of training and student safety have been fully incorporated into the design apart from mandatory operation requirement.

Plant is designed for 24-hour operation. Operator needs to be present to monitor the operation. Except for few routine requirements, Plant is controlled by the DCS system. Many of the anticipated emergency situations were tackled by the safeguarding system to protect the personnel and Plant equipment. Besides monitoring of plant conditions through DCS system, operators are also in the field for field operations; pump change over, chemical refilling, tanker unloading, checking rotating equipment for abnormalities, etc.

The KDU Plant is designed to separate 1,170 BPSD (150 T/SD) of kerosene into top product, Hydrocarbon Solvent, and bottom product. The Unit consists of a main distillation column with side stripper, Heat Transfer Fluid (HTF) system, Flare stack, tankage, hydrocarbon and water effluent drainage system and associated equipment. The utility system consists of steam, cooling water, fuel gas, fuel oil, nitrogen and instrument/plant air.
